52 Self Portraits: Week 8

At the rate I'm going, I won't be done with this project for 3 years!

Here's my latest installment. I was excited to finally be able to play with my camera outside. The weather was nice with little breeze.

52 Self Portraits: Week 8 (by John Brainard)

Some things that are wrong with this picture are:

  • Flash not balanced with the natural light. I need to get some gels.
  • I wanted the background to go darker than this.. It looked the way I wanted on the camera's LCD.

As always, comments and criticisms are very welcome!

Hey John, nice shot (no pun intended). I actually like how the background came out. If you were looking to pull it in more then going with a darker background and a snooted or honeycombed pull of light on your face and guns might have been interesting. But that will also make this a more threatening image, which might be the point.

Best wishes. Hope we can go shooting sometime soon.

Thanks for the comments, Beau! I didn't anticipate anyone seeing this as a threatening image. I was taking pictures out by that big tree in my yard and thought a gun leaning up against the tree would be a neat prop. And, being that I'm trying to incorporate hobbies and other aspects of who I am into this project, it would only be right to include some of my favorite toys. So, I ran back to the house to grab a couple.

The first thought that came to my mind was sitting there, taking a nap while out squirrel hunting or something. :)

I did want the background to go a little darker than it did and for the lighting to have been less harsh. I need something softer like one of the Lumiquest Soft Boxes.

Whenever you want to go out shooting again, let me know. I'll let you pick the time and place this time... Saturdays work out best, but I could also do a Sunday afternoon as well.
